Yates Mill Pond, Raleigh, NC in the old days
"Bug Eye" Shallow water work boat
While some of our photos are easy to place location wise, others are more challenging. This photo of a local old Mill has had us wondering about the the location for about five years.
We knew it wasn't Lassiter Mill, and we suspected after talking to the Park Supervisor & the official "Miller" at Yates Mill Pond, that it's in fact....drum roll please...Yates Mill!
Please order a print today!
This boat is a shallow water draft boat. They were popular from the Chesepeake Bay and south along the coast. The were work boats and used mainly for fishing, shrimping and oyster operations. During the War Between the States, they were used to ferry the much needed guns, supplies and food to Southern towns along the many rivers. They were also used to get around the blockades set by the Northern aggressors and were known as "Blockade Runners".
